We look forward to you visiting our clinic to see how knowledge, experience and compassion can meet to create an exceptionally positive testing experience. Plan on spending about an hour at our facility and bring clothes that will allow your electrophysiologist to fully access the extremity being testing (shorts or loose sweatpants and a short-sleeved shirt). IMPORTANT: PLEASE DO NOT APPLY LOTION OR OIL TO THE EXTREMITY BEING TESTED.
Small sticky electrodes are placed on the skin on top of the nerve or muscle being tested, then several electrical impulses are sent down (or up) the nerve while the electrophysiologist measures the speed of the impulse using an electrodiagnostic machine. Most patients describe the sensation felt during the test as a bit strange, but very tolerable.
A small wire electrode is used to record the communication between the nerve roots in the neck or back and muscles of the arm or leg. Similarly, small sticky electrodes are placed on the skin, but no electrical impulses are felt. Instead, a small pinching sensation is felt, then the electrophysiologist will ask the patient to gently move their arm or leg.
Formal electrodiagnostic reports will be returned to the referring provider by the next business day.
